DEK: Building a Solid Foundation for Data-Driven Logistics

The largest supplier of construction materials in the Czech Republic. An extensive branch network, high transport volumes and growing demands on operational organisation led the company to Time Slot Control.

We moved from a logistics jungle to a well-organised Czech forest with paths, signposts and beautiful views. Implementing a logistics management system has been a fundamental and highly significant benefit for a company operating in the construction industry.

What led you to implement a dock scheduling system?

We did not have any specialised logistics system in place and wanted to gain greater control over our operations. We had seen similar solutions work very effectively in other industries. At that time, time slot scheduling was not common practice in the construction sector, neither among suppliers nor competitors.

How did you search for a time slot solution?

We primarily based our selection on our operational requirements and recommendations from logistics experts. Ideally, we were looking for a Czech supplier offering a Czech-language solution that would be easy for both employees and business partners to use.

How did the implementation process go? Did you encounter any challenges?

The biggest challenge was not the technology itself, but changing established processes. At that time, the construction materials distribution sector was not prepared for such a solution, so intensive communication with suppliers and the establishment of common rules were necessary.

Warehouse managers quickly recognised the benefits of eliminating truck queues and improving operational organisation. Over time, we successfully rolled the system out internally and among suppliers, and we continue to develop it further today.

How important was the ability to integrate Time Slot Control with other systems?

Integration capabilities were one of our key requirements. We connected Time Slot Control with our internal systems as well as an automated gate supplied by a third-party vendor. We appreciate the openness of the solution and its ability to work alongside other technologies.

Another advantage is the possibility of connecting analytics tools such as Power BI, enabling us to evaluate logistics data and further expand automation.

What changes did you notice after implementation? What benefits has TSC delivered?

At our larger branches, approximately 70% of transport was moved into managed scheduling very quickly. Another 20–25% followed during the subsequent months.

Today, suppliers book their time slots independently, and logistics processes are significantly more transparent. Faster onboarding of new warehouse managers has also been a valuable benefit.

Have you quantified any savings generated by TSC? Are there any other measurable efficiency improvements?

Reducing costs was not our primary objective; improving efficiency was. After implementing the system, we increased transport volumes by approximately 30% without increasing the number of warehouse employees. Warehouse productivity improved significantly, as did the overall organisation of transport.

The transition from a logistics jungle to a calm, well-organised environment with clear routes, signposts and visibility has been transformative. In my opinion, implementing a logistics management system is a fundamental and highly valuable benefit for any company operating in the construction industry.

How did business partners, customers and carriers adapt to the new system?

The largest suppliers, responsible for the majority of shipments, adopted the system within just a few days. Smaller suppliers required more time.

Interestingly, carriers themselves often became advocates of the system. Based on their experience from other operations, they clearly understood the difference between an organised unloading process and waiting for hours outside a warehouse.

Why did you choose Time Slot Control from Lotraco?

We were looking for a functional, transparent and cost-effective solution. Time Slot Control appealed to us as a ready-made system available in Czech with a transparent licensing model. We did not want a complex international platform, but a practical solution that employees, suppliers and carriers could use without difficulty.

How satisfied are you with the application, user interface and technical support?

Over four years of operation, we have experienced only a handful of short outages, and technical support has always responded very quickly. We have been consistently satisfied with both the stability of the system and the quality of support.

What are the key benefits of Time Slot Control?

The main advantages are its availability in Czech, simplicity, transparency and stability. Today we use Time Slot Control across approximately 100 branches, yet it remains user-friendly for both warehouse staff and management.

Would you recommend TSC to other companies in the construction industry?

At the beginning, I was essentially acting as an ambassador for the system among our suppliers. I would recommend TSC to our competitors as well… although perhaps cautiously, so as not to strengthen the competition too much. (laughs)

In my opinion, it is an excellent solution for suppliers of construction materials. However, successful implementation requires strong management support and sufficient authority to drive change. If a company operates dozens of branches and handles significant transport volumes, a solution like this should be considered essential.
